Evaluation Question 1

Evaluation Question 1 - In What Ways Does Your Media Product Use, Develop Or Challenge Forms And Conventions Of Real Media Products?

The real media artifact on the left has a large, bold heading that spans across the entire page behind the main image. The main image is almost a full body shot and is in the center of the page. The magazine has quite a few images on the cover which fill what would otherwise be dead space. The banner across the top adds colour to the magazine and helps the audience to see other main stories. The cover of this magazine is actually quite busy with a lot of images and other stories featured. The barcode on this cover is actually quite large for a magazine the price is also featured in this area.
My cover on the right also has a large bold heading but it doesn't span across the page like in the real media artifact. The main image also contrasts as it is an extreme close up but like the real media artifact it covers the whole page. My cover is quite busy witch, as you can tell from the real media artifact, is something that is associated with the stereotypical 'Country' magazine. My barcode is small and out of the way but like the real media artifact I have put the price by the barcode.

The real media artifact on the left has a double page contents page; the main story image is the largest and takes up over half of the left hand side of the left hand page. The 'other stories' take up whats left of the right hand side on both pages, the font size of these stories is the smallest featured on the pages. The page numbers are really big and help to clearly show which are the main stories; it doesn't really have a heading as such but smaller titles.
My contents page on the right is a single page contents page; the main story image is the largest and covers a large section of the top right corner. The 'other stories' are spread down the left and have the smallest font on the page. My page numbers vary in size depending on the importance of the story for example my main story page number is larger than all the rest. My heading is large and obvious and helps to clearly depict what the page is for, next to the heading is the date and the edition number.

The real media artifact's double page spread heading spans across both columns, has a large font size and is bold. The image is mostly on the right page but it carry's on across both pages. The story has 2 columns. One has writing and the other has pictures. It doesn't use any pull quotes although it does have a drop caps.

My double page spread's heading has a very large font, this makes it obvious to the audience that it is the heading and like the real media artifact it spreads across more than one line, it also spans across all three columns of my story. My image takes up all of the left hand page and is overlapped slightly by a quote and a red banner in keeping with my house theme. My story has 3 columns and a drop caps.

Evaluation Question 3

Evaluation Question 3 - What Kind Of Media Institution Might Distribute Your Media Product And Why?

What is an institution?

An institution is a company that distributes a media product for audience consumption.

What else can an institution do?

Before making the magazine, the producers can go to an institution to pitch their idea and ask if the institution would fund the project.

What institutions might distribute your music magazine?

After a some research I found that the top three institutions most likely to distribute my magazine would be:
  • IPC Media
  • Emap
  • Bauer Media
Upon further research I found that Emap are most likely to distribute my magazine. This is because Emap are famous for taking on magazines where the genre isn't the most popular. Emap describes themselves as "Always independent  relentlessly inquisitive, Emap embodies quality, market leading journalism. We act as the ultimate industry for everything and anything!"

Where would you distribute a magazine product to?

A magazine would go straight into shops either nationally or internationally. However for a music magazine it makes sense to distribute it to shops in countries where the genre is popular.

Where is Country Music most popular?

Country Music is most popular in America. However it has recently become more popular across other countries, like Britian.
This is because of artists such as Lady Antebellum and Taylor Swift making it into the UK charts. Other country music artists, such as Bruce Springsteen and Carrie Underwood have been touring in the UK.

Update 11

Today I have continued with my Evaluation. I have started question 6 and am using the website designer Wix.com. I am also going to start work on the voice over today.

Mrs D

This is a good start for your evaluation. I would like to see a detailed plan of all 7 questions soon to check your understadning and range of ICT. The question one response is a good start, however, don't just technique spot - you need some analysis - use rma research to help you.

Evaluation Question 2 - How Does Your Media Product Represent Particular Social Groups?

Evaluation Question 2 - DRAFT

The image on the left is my picture and the image on the right is a profesional picture from a double page spread for a country music magazine.
The profesional image is taken straight on and the girl is positioned at an angle, looking over her shoulder. In my image 'Summer' is also looking over her shoulder and is turned at an angle however it isn't quite as prominant as the professional photograph.
The background of the profesional image is dark and has objects (leaves) as well. This creates a natural but darker feel. This is contrasted by the bright outfit the girl has been dressed in. In my photograph the background is light and plain, except for the shadow, and her outfit contrasts against the background by being darker. The outfits themselves are very different in style. Both images are midshots and and have been taken at moderatly close range.

Final Pieces

Final Pieces

For my cover I have flipped the image because the text was overlapping and it took the eye away from the image. I like that the text all matches and am glad I could make the 'main story' stand out against the rest of the text.

For the contents page I have made it so that the text shows the features in order of 'importance'. For example 'Summer in the UK' is the largest story heading because it's the main story. The font size then decreases for the other features and again for the other stories.

For the double page spread I have extended the story so that it continues onto the next page. I have made the title larger so that it stands out from the rest of the text and the pull quotes help to break up the story.

Development of Cover

Development of Cover

I have made the main story heading larger and outlined it in bold. This means that it matches the sub-stories in font and colour.

Development of Contents

Development of Contents

After looking at the edited image of 'Summer' I was very unhappy with the out come so have instead used the original image and cropped it. This means there are no uneven lines.

Development of Cover

Development of Cover

I have flipped the image in order to solve the issue of the main heading overlapping with the image too much. I have moved the sub-title of 'Bringing Country Back' to be underneath the main heading.

I have changed the sub-stories so that they correspond with the features on my contents page. I have also moved the sub-stories so that they almost mold around the image.

I have changed the size of the fonts so that the heading 'Rodeo' is the largest, the main story 'Summer in The UK' is just over half the size of the heading. The sub-story headings are just under half the size of the main story and the information underneath is half the size of the sub-story headings.

Audience Feedback

Audience Feedback

  • The heading overlaps the image to much
  • The sub-heading is to big
  • The sub-heading would look better under the heading
  • The font sizes are too similar

Development of Cover

Development of Cover

I have extended the picture so that the guitar reaches the edge to a better fit.

Development of Contents

Development of Contents

I have changed the font sizes in order to show the importance of each story in reflection to another of more or less importance.

I have also cropped some of the images a bit more in order to make them fit or be framed better.

Development of Contents

Development of Contents

I have cropped the image of 'Summer' a little bit more so that the edge where I edited around the hair isn't as obvious as before.

Development of Double Page Spread

Development of Double Page Spread

I have made the title 'Summer In The UK larger so that it doesn't blend as much with the other headings and pull quotes.

I have also made an arrow in the bottom right to indicate that the story continues onto the next page.

Development of Cover

Development of Cover

I have changed the image on the front of my magazine and incorporated the guitar I was thinking of using when I originally planned this photo shoot.

I have also slightly re-positioned the sub-heading 'Bring Country Back' so that it is not covering her face as much. I might re-position it again as I am still not sure about its position.

Development of Contents

Development of Contents

I have changed the image of 'Summer' and have changed the poster images to live photographs.

Development of Contents

Development of Contents

I have rearranged the contents page according to my audience feedback.

I have made the section for the main story larger. I have made the other stories with images smaller so that they don't detract as much from the main story. Also I have split the 'other stories' into two sections and have added a couple of stories in order to fill the empty spaces.

I have also added the issue number to the top in order to fill the remaining dead space.

I will change the image of 'Summer' in the top left and the free poster images to another set of images.

Development of Front Cover

Development of Front Cover

I am changing the image used on the Front Cover this is because the image currently being used is to similar to the images already used on the Contents Page and Double Page Spread. Also I still like the idea of using a   guitar in the image. The following photographs are the photographs I am debating about using before being edited and cropped:

Updated Double Page Spread Story 4

Updated Double Page Spread Story

Popular young Country Music singer Summer is finally bringing her hit tour over to the UK! Growing up in a little town, just south of Nashville, she was known as the small girl with the big voice. She started her career singing in the local cafe and at events, like the 4th of July celebrations held by the town. She was discovered during one of these events by popular music producer Greg Mitchell when he came to visit his sister and her family.

We managed to grab him for a few minuets and here's what happened!

Q. How do you think Summer's Careers going?

A. Better than I ever could have imagined! I knew she was talented I just wasn't sure how people would react to her. Mostly because of her age.

Q. How did you 'discover' Summer?

A. Well it was the forth of July and I was at my home town's annual festival and she preformed a country song she had written herself. She just oozed light, enthusiasm and confidence. And when she started singing you could see in her face she believed every word and her voice, as you know, is as good as any other country singer.

Q. Yes she is very young, do you think this has hindered her in any way?

A. No she has taken to this life incredibly and I truly think it was her destiny!

After she was discovered she quickly became a firm favorite on charts nation wide. At the age of just 14 she is one of the youngest ever country music singers but for her fans she is just as good as artists 3 times her senior!

After finishing her first tour around America just 2 months ago she's ready to hit the stage in the UK! With performances in Manchester, Edinburgh and London already lined up this tour is sure to be a hit!

We were very grateful when Summer took some time out her busy schedule to come and talk to us so you could find out more about whats going on in her world!

Q. How are you enjoying the life of a Country Music Superstar?

A. Haha well its just so manic! But that's a given what with my second tour and a new single on the way!

Q. Yes the tour! Your fans here in the UK must be very excited.

A. Yeah they do seem to be which is great because so am I!

Q. Is there anything you can tell us about your tour that we don't already know?

A. Well there will be a couple of new songs and there's a little secret something else but for that you'll have to wait to see!

The Tour will be called 'If I Could Make A Living Out Of Loving You' which is also the title of her new single which will be released on the 19th of April this year!

Q. Can you give us a description of the song?

A. Its basically about whats happening in my life right now, its about how manic my life has gotten and the consequences that come with it.

Q. We've seen you write songs about your life before, why do you choose to write about reality and not the idealistic life that so many artists sing about?

A. Because to me music is what life sounds like and if you've experienced whats going on in the song then its easier to portray the emotions and the story line to the audience. Also I like to try and be as open as possible with my fans. They are after all one of the main reasons for my success!

For such a young girl Summer seems to have slipped right into the day to day workings of being a teenage superstar. However being thrown into an adult orientated world cannot have been easy.

Q. What do you miss most about life before your music career took off?

A. Being an ordinary girl. I don't get to just hang out with my friends as much as I used to. I don't go to school anymore and with all the travelling I'm not at home much. My family is with me a lot of the time but being a singer means leaving people behind. But most being able to do things that all my friends are doing or are going to do.

Q. Do you regret becoming a singer?

A. No and I never will because as much as I sometimes long for a normal teenage life my life is awesome! I have a job I love and so long as I make an effort friends and family will never be left behind!

Q. Never? not even a little bit? Do you not ever wonder 'what if I had waited' you could have had that ordinary life you miss. With your friends and family.

A. Never... to me music is what I was meant to do and the fact I got the chance so early in life is a blessing. There are times I will think 'what if' but everyone does so I suppose in some way that adds a little normality to my life!

Q. If you'd never been discovered where do you think you'd be right now?

A. Still in school I suppose

Q. What Do you enjoy most about being a singer?

A. Being able to make an impact on people and their lives, however small it may be. And the travelling of course!!!!!

Q. Oh so you like travelling? Where would you like to go most? Or have you already visited your favorite place?

A. I don't think I have somewhere I want to go most and I've loved everywhere! Although at the moment I am really excited about my trip to the UK!

The tickets for the first part of the tour which will take place in Manchester will go on sale the morning of the 13th of June. I know all of us here at Rodeo will be eagerly awaiting their release and I can see the tour selling out in record time!

Update 9

Update 9

Over the weekend I will continue to edit my Double Page Spread, Contents Page and Cover Page. I will also begin to gather my audience feedback using a variety of different technologies and software.

I also want to write some more story for the Double Page Spread so that I can effectively carry it onto the 'next page'.

Development of Contents Page

Development of Contents Page

I have added the 'Free Posters' Section back to the lower right corner which fills the majority of the gap.

There is still quite a bit of dead space between the 'Free Posters' and the 'End of the Line' story.

Development of Double Page Spread

Development of Double Page Spread

I have edited the photograph so that there is no longer the odd obstruction at the top.

Also upon further research I found that the majority of stories that are on the main subject travel over a couple of pages. Because I want the Double Page Spread to be as realistic as possible I will extend the story and 'continue' it onto the next page.

Tuesday, 19 March 2013

Development of Contents

Development of Contents

This is my first development of my Contents Page.I have added another story to the bottom of the the left side of the page. Got rid of the large 'free posters' sign and have extended the 'Other stories' section adding in a story called 'Country Clothing'.

I think I will add the 'free posters' back in just smaller and in the bottom right.

Update 8

Update 8

I have read the audience feedback for my contents page and am going to try a couple of designs and see which one the audience prefers.

Audience Feedback of Contents Page

Audience Feedback

  • It doesn't show a lot of the stories so although it says there are 50 something stories the content of the contents page doesn't portray this.
  • Get rid of or make the 'free posters' strip smaller
  • Add more stories/images

Development of Contents Page

Development of Contents Page

I have added the last photograph to the Contents Page. I chose to use a different photograph from my Cover and Double Page Spread in order to increase the range of  photographs I have used.

I still need to add the images of posters and change the name at the bottom.

Development of Double Page Spread

Development of Double Page Spread

I have added a new image to my Double Page Spread. I think I need to crop it a little at the top because there is something at the top of the photograph that isn't supposed to be there.

I have choosen this photograph because it has personality.

Update 7

Update 7

Tonight I will be taking the photographs needed to finish my contents page and Double Page Spread. I also still need to change the name on the Cover from 'Bomshel' to 'Summer'. I also have to Change the quote.

Development of Double Page Spread

Development of Double Page Spread

On the right hand page I have increased the size of the text boxes to fill in dead space, made the pull quotes bigger and edited my story so that the extra space created by extending the text boxes is now filled.

I have also made my name larger so that the dead space at the bottom is not as big as it was before.

I still need to add the image to the right hand page.

I have changed the title of my Double Page Spread and have therefore had to come through and change this on my contents page.

I still have to change the name at the bottom or get rid of it and add the final image.

After deciding to use the name summer I have gone through the article and changed the names accordingly.

I have also changed the title to fit the new name and article.

I still need to put in the new full page image.

I also want to move my name to the space at the bottom of the magazine and fill the space at the top under the title with a sub-heading.

I have removed the image from the left hand side in order to replace it with the new image.

I still need to add the photograph and change the heading. I also have to go through the actual article and change the name.

I have now changed my images to be more suitable for the genre. There are multiple angles and shot types used meaning the images are now more interesting to look at than before.

I have reduced the 'Other Stories' section from two to one in order to have more images.

I have left space for the photograph of my main artist as I do not want to use the same image for the cover, contents and double page spread.

I also have to put posters in the bottom corner and change the name of my artist on this page.

Development of Double Page Spread

I have improve the wrapping around the pull quotes and moved them so that they merge with the story more fluently.

I have decreased the font size of my story from 12 pt to 10 pt. This has allowed me to increase the content of my story and to fill the page better.

I still have to change the name on this page and edit the story to incorporate the new name.

Development of Double Page Spread Story 2

Updated Double Page Spread Story

Popular young Country Music singer Bomshel is finally bringing her hit tour over to the UK!

Q. How do you think Bomshel's Careers going?

A. Better than I ever could have imagined! I knew she was talented I just wasn't sure how people would react to her. Mostly because of her age.

We were very grateful when Bomshel took some time out her busy schedule to come and talk to us so you could find out more about whats going on in her world!

Update 5

Update 5

On Saturday the 10th I will take more images of my main model so I can change the picture used on the Double Page Spread and Contents Page.

I also need to take new photographs for the contents page in which I have used a wider range of shots. This is because the images I am currently using don't particularly fit the theme and they are all mid shots.

I need to come up with a new name for my main artist as 'Bomshel' doesn't fit the image I have made for my artist.

Mrs D

Well done for hitting your dps deadline. I like the use of colour and text and font style. I'm not sure that the term 'bomshel' works for the age of your artist. Have another think. Some gaps and pull quotes need work. Do you want to use the same image on the front cover and DPS? Go back to the criteria and check image.

Double Page Spread

This is the first finished draft of my Double Page Spread.

I have finished the story, added my name to the top right.

I will now get audience feedback on my Double Page Spread and edit it accordingly.

Beginning the Double Page Spread

Beginning the Double Page Spread

I have added the caption, page numbers that coincide with the contents page, the second quote and I've also made the Q and A's of the question and answer section bold and larger than the rest of the text.

I still have to finish putting in the story the the first draft will be done.

I have continued to add my story and have added one of the two pull quotes. I have re-positioned the first pull quote so that it doesn't overlap on the question and answer.

I need to finish my story, add the image and caption and I also need to add a page number.

Audience Feedback on Possible Quotes

Audience Feedback on Possible Quotes

When I gathered the audience feedback on the quotes I asked them to pick their two favorites because I need two Pull Quotes.

The top quote chosen was "To Me Music Is What Life Sounds Like" this is quite a deep quote so I would like the second one to be slightly more lighthearted.

For the second quote there is a draw between "It's Just So Manic!!" and "So Excited To Be Playing The UK For The First Time!". I will be using ""It's Just So Manic!!" because its short and simple and has the lightheartedness I'm looking for.
