Beginning the Double Page Spread 2

Beginning the Double Page Spread 2

I have added the colour to the title and caption and I have also added a transparent green underlay for the caption.

I have also added the Blue Ridge Heavy SF font to the Pull-quotes.

Having the same picture on my cover and the double page spread my make the article uninteresting to look at as the image has already been seen. I think I will change the photograph for the Double Page Spread and possibly use the original image in the small image slot left.

Beginning the Double Page Spread

Beginning the Double Page Spread

I have created the basic layout of my Double Page Spread and added the main picture. This is the same photograph I used on my Cover Page.

I have added my title in the font Tropical Script BNT Bamboo. This matches the other titles used throughout the magazine.

I have left spaces for pull quotes, images and captions so that I remember where I want these to be positioned.

Next using the fx tool in Serif Page Plus I will change the colour of the title so that it continues through with the same style as the rest of the magazine. I also want to add a green transparent strip under the caption like the one I used on the Cover Page.

Mrs D

Well done for hitting your contents deadline. Your use of colour and font and most choices of images match the genre and audience well. However, there are a lot of gaps - consider what you are offering your customer. Also the images are all mid shots and aren't really cropped well. Go back to your RMAs and the mark scheme to help with this.

Beginning The Contents 5

Development of Contents

I have almost the first edition of my Contents page.

Since the last post I have finished adding all the photographs and I have changed the colour of the strips holding the 'other stories' to green so that they match the front cover.

I have also changed the colour of the page numbers on the photographs so that they are clearer and stand out more against the photographs.

Beginning The Contents 4

Beginning The Contents 4

Also the page number on the photograph I already have does not stand out as much as I'd like so I will look at re-colouring those.

I still have to add the photographs and the posters to the Contents page. I also want to move the title in and down a little bit so that it fits on the page better and doesn't look like it's about to fall off.

Development of Cover

Development of Cover

After doing the new photo shoot I have chosen this photograph. I had to change my model as the original model was unavailable.

I have also made it so that the photograph fits the whole page. However this meant editing the title, sub-heading's and story titles because they were blending with the image and were difficult to see. Adding the border colour makes the writing stand out against the photograph and I like this style however the sub-heading is a little hard to read so I may have to make it a little bigger or make the border thinner.

Beginning the Contents 3

I have added the right hand page numbers for the other magazine stories.

Update 4

Update 4

After adding the page numbers to the contents I realize that I want to keep the font as Blue Ridge Heavy SF but change the sub-heading colour from purple to black. This will still match my cover because I have used black for the stories mentioned on the front.

Beginning The Contents 2

Beginning The Contents 2

After looking at the last contents page I have tried to leave more space so the page doesn't feel as cluttered.

When it comes to the sub-headings that come with the images I want to change either the font or the colour as I don't feel they are linking nicely with each other.

Beginning the Contents

Beginning the Contents

This is the start of my first draft of the contents page. It is not yet finished as I have to add the images. However I do not like the layout or the font of the stories.

I think the title and the date are fine and I also like my advert design. However the rest of the page is blocky and doesn't flow nicely from the cover.

Update 3

I will be doing the re-shoot for the cover photograph on Monday after school and at the same time will be doing the photo shoot for the Double Page Spread. Also on Monday I will begin to design my Contents Page ready for Thursday.

Development of the Draft of the Cover

Development of the Draft of the Cover

This is my second draft of the Cover. After gathering some audience
feedback I have made the following changes.

I have moved the price from the top right corner to be next to the bar-code. I have also changed the bar-code to one which is much more compact.

I will also be changing the image but still need to complete the photo shoot for this.

I also edited the colour slightly so that the background is slightly brighter and the banner is more of a dark green. I like the background being slightly brighter but I also prefer the original coloring for the banner so I will probably change that back in the next draft. However I will get some audience feedback before that and inquire which colours are preferred.

Audience Feedback

Audience Feedback

  • The price is in the 'wrong place' move it to next to the bar-code or under the title on the left
  • There's a lot of space in the upper left maybe use another photograph instead of the one you have that can be stretched more to cover more of the space.

Mrs D

Well done for hitting your front cover deadline. The mes matches the genre and it's nice to see a guitar in the image. However, the image is not great - it needs to fill the space and be cropped better. I would recommend taking some more images and giving yourself some options.

Final First Draft Of Front Cover

Final First Draft Of Front Cover

For my cover I wanted it to be quite earthy and simple but have a feminine touch to it.

The browns and greens help to give it a 'down-to-earth' feel, they are also quite natural which is a theme I wish to continue through the magazine.

The purple gives it the feminine touch I was going for. It also stands out against the earthy background colours.

However I am not sure about the picture it doesn't fit the normal profile of a country magazine and I don't feel it fits the page correctly.

Today I continued work on my cover. I came up with Idea's for the main story and the sub-stories. I added a bar-code and I played about the placing of the price. At the moment I've left it in the top right because that space is quite bare, but I may move it down beside the bar-code as I had originally planned to do.

In today's lesson I started to design my first front cover. I will continue to do this and will be taking my photographs later today.

Names For My Magazine

Names

From my audience feedback I can see that Rodeo and This Is Country Music are the most popular names.

I think I will use Rodeo because its short, memorable and goes well with the 'lasso' style font.

Update

Update

Today I came up with various names for my magazine and got some audience feedback on those names.
This will help me to decide which name I wish to use.

Mrs D

Well done for hitting your planning deadline. There is a lot of work here and some interesting ideas. Try and post throughout the week to show good time management rather than lots of posts in one day.

Timetable 1

'House Style' for Magazine

'House Style' for Magazine

Synergy for the Magazine:
  • The magazine is going to have the brown (from my chosen colour scheme) as the background colour.
  • There will be flashes of purple (again from the chosen colour scheme) to make the magazine more feminine and also to add a splash of colour into the otherwise sophisticated colour scheme making it more appropriate for the audience of 16-25 year old's.
  • The title on the cover, contents page and double page spread will all be in the font Tropicali Script BTN Bamboo.
  • Any sub-headings will also be in this font.
  • Any pull-quotes will be bold and purple in the font Blue Ridge Heavy SF because it was the second favorite from the audience feedback.
  • The front cover image will be of two girls, one with a guitar, they will be standing in front of a white wall in a couple of the outfits I have put together.
  • The layout of the pages will be primarily symmetrical in order to use space efficiently.

Set Idea's

Set Idea's

For my sets I want to use homely chairs and sofa's. I also want a plain background so I would like to use a studio or a plain wall to do this.

I think a plain white wall might be the simplest to do with the types of furniture I want to use also because I am having my house painted and there are some men coming to move furniture so it will be better for me to take the photographs at home.

Letter of Acceptance

Dear ………………………………

For my Media AS level I have to create a music magazine. This magazine has to include original images and I would like your permission to take photographs of you. Please read the terms and conditions in the following paragraph and sign on the dotted line.

I agree to have my photograph taken by Nicole Margetts to be used in her           magazine. I also understand that the photograph will be posted on her blog on the internet. I agree to co-operate with the costumes and make-up she chooses.

Double Page Spread Layout Draft 4

Draft 4

The image on this Double Page Spread takes up the whole of the left page and has nothing over it so all the attention is souly on the image.

On the right had page there are three columns and a title. The title goes across two columns allowing for extra space at the top for the third column to be extended. This creates more room for the story.

There are page numbers at the bottom of the pages to inform which page this story is on in case someone is trying to find a particular story fast. There are no pull quotes and with the extra space at the top of the third column the amount of text is probably more daunting to the reader.

Double Page Spread Layout Draft 3

Draft 3

The left page is covered by an image with a small caption in the bottom left. The caption is at an angle. This is to make it stand out against the photo.

The right hand side has a title spreading across all the columns. There are three columns of equal size to make it symmetrical. There are page numbers to allow the reader to quickly find the story they wish to read.

There are two pull quotes used to break up the large amount of texts. The first column is shorter than the other two because there is a second image at the bottom. This also helps to break up the writing with a visual aid.

Double Page Spread Layout Draft 2

Draft 2

Using the whole of the left page for an image allows plenty of space on the right for the columns and story. The caption on the right creates interest and would be used to ignight the readers interest in the story.

There are three columns which are all the same siz and corrospont to the title which is centrelised over the columns. Having the title with the columns means there is less space for the story but it also helps to cut down on the blocky feel I had in the last draft.

The pull quotes are used to gain interest in the story and break up the large amounts of text presented to make it look like a less daunting read to the viewer. Because the age range is quite young at 16-25 year olds this will help to keep them engaged in the article.

Double Page Spread Layout Draft 1

Draft 1

The structure is sharp and uses space effeciently however it is a bit boring to look at.

The columns are identicle in size which gives the page a very regimented feel. There are no pull quotes so the audience's only taste of the article comes from the title.

The title being on the left and not with the columns allows for more story space but it blocks the photo.

Both pages are quite blocky which detracts from the asthetics of the magazine. This layout is very simple and quite bland. There's nothing pulling me into the article except the picture.

Contents Page Layout Draft 4

Draft 4

On the top lefty is the title with a small date positioned underneath. Neither of these are symmetrical with the columns, images and stories on this page. This decreases the aesthetics.

It has three columns with an image and story at both the top and bottom. In the middle there is the main story and image. This travels across all three columns to make it stand out.

There is an advert in the top right corner. This is out of line with the rest of the columns and images. Also being at the top gives it some degree of importance and it takes over the page. In size it is larger than the majority of the images which automatically draws the viewers eye away from the featured stories.

Also on this contents page there are very few stories mentioned and no small list of other stories that can be found inside.

Contents Page Layout Draft 3

Draft 3

This contents page is very symmetrical the only exception being the date. The title travels across all of the columns presented. This same theme is repeated at the bottom for the advert.

There are three columns. The two outer columns are identical using an image and a small caption to show what is inside the magazine. The central column is for the remaining, smaller stories to be listed and numbered according to page appearance.

The regimented style of this creates an efficient use of space however there is a large gap between the title and the columns. In order to use the space more effectively this gap should be made to match the gap between the columns and the advert in order to continue with the symmetrical theme shown.

Contents Page Layout Draft 2

Draft 2

This contents page has three columns which have been filled with a lot of images and story's. This amount of images may be a bit overpowering for the viewer. Also it gives a feeling of panic because so much has been packed into such a small space, this contrasts with the genre because country music is associated with calmness, love and self-worth not panic and mayhem.

The title and date are not at all symmetrical with the three columns which shows no order to this contents page. There is a small space at the bottom on the right hand side for other stories. However this is overpowered by the sheer amount of other stories on the page.

Contents Page Layout Draft 1

Draft 1

This contents page's title is spread across the top keeping symmetrical to three columns that are featured. The columns each have image and stories, but not so many that the viewer feels overpowered and unable to focus on one for very long because of distractions from others.

The main story from the cover has been spread over the top of the second and third columns, keeping flush with the borders already set.

The third column features other stories to help the viewer navigate the rest of the magazine. The date in the top left sits nicely just above the first column and is also symmetrical to the column.

At the bottom is an advert which travels across two columns but is, again, symmetrical with the columns. being at the bottom the advert doesn't draw attention away from the rest of the contents page.

Cover Page Layout Draft 4

Draft 4

The title of this layout takes up only part of  the top of the cover and is overlapped by a subheading. The main image, again, covers the whole of the background. The main story is on a strip which is surrounded by the photograph.

The sub-stories are low on the right hand side so that they interfere less with the image by are still prominent. Again the barcode and price are in the bottom left hand corner which allows more space for the rest of the cover and it also doesn't draw attention away from the rest of the magazine.

Cover Page Layout Draft 3

Draft 3

This layout design has a title and a subheading. I like the subheading and want to carry it forward into my final drafts.

Having the main image cover the whole page and not just from below the title means that the photograph would have to have a moderatly large background in order to accomidate the title without blocking the image in anyway.

Having sub-stories on both sides is very restrictive and would cause difficulty when it came to inserting photographs.

Again this cover has the main story on a banner which I like because of the way it is surrounded by the picture. But again I would bring it in so it streatches almost to the edges but not quite.

Throughout my drafts the barecode and price have been in the bottom left and this is no exception as it allows freedom and space on the rest of the cover.

Cover Page Layout Draft 2

Draft 2

I like this layout because it has a very structured layout where everything fits and flows nicely with each other. I like having a strip for the main story thats not right at the bottom because it means its surrounded by the image. However if i was to go with this layout I would shrink the box slightly in order to have it so it's not touching the edges of the cover.

Again I like the barcode being in the bottom left corner as it's out the way but still obvious. The sub-stories being sectioned on the right means I will have to look carefully at the the image so it works around them.

I'm not sure about the layout because it restricts what I am able to do.

Cover Page Layout Draft 1

Draft 1

I like this layout because it is very basic and simple. This allows me to be more creative with design and images.
I like the barcode and price being in the bottom left corner because its out of the way and doesn't interfere with the rest of the layout. Having the image below the title means that they dont interfere and draw attention away from one another.

I'm not sure about having the sub-stories down the side like that because it's quite bland and may not serve their purpose to attract attention to whats inside the magazine as well.

Heading - Audience Feedback

Audience Feedback

This bar graph shows the audience feedback for the preferred type of heading. The most popular heading was Tropicali Script BTN Bamboo. The audience said that the font looked like a 'lasso' and reminded them of cowboys and the country. They also said that the slight curve made it flow and also gave it the feel of being handwritten which made it feel more natural which they also associated country.

I agree with the comments made and out of the range of headings this one does have the most country feel to it and I think it would fit well with the chosen colour scheme. I will also use this font for any subheadings.

For any pull quotes I will use the font Blue Ridge Heavy SF because it is bold and was also the second favorite font chosen by the audience.

Final Colour Scheme

Final Colour Scheme

After receiving my audience feedback I took it into account and changed it to be what they wanted. I agree with what they said as the brown created the earthy feel but the green put emphasis on that theme. The purple gives it that flair of femininity as well as giving it a 'young' feel. The white contrasts against the rest of the colours nicely and gives me room to emphasize things like headings and subheadings.

Colour Scheme - Audience Feedback

Feedback

  • The second colour scheme is better because its got the 'earthy' colours
  • The pink is good because it shows it's for women
  • Swap the red with the green from the first colour scheme
